Discover Your Dream Job & Talents During Tough Times!
Did you just lose your job? Or maybe you have your dream job and suddenly the company is reorganizing and you’re confused and unsure of what your job is anymore? If this sounds like you or you know someone going through change in the workplace or is going through career transition, this week’s blog is for you. I would like to share with you two true stories. They are both stories of discovery during a difficult time.
The first story is the discovery of finding what the dream job looks like.
I was talking to my girlfriend Lauren about her husband's job situation. We’ll call him Kevin. Lauren told me Kevin just lost his job, he was depressed and having a difficult time finding another job. She also told me he always gets bored after 6-months on the job. She thought he was being lazy and inconsistent in his thinking because the only thing consistent about Kevin’s professional life was getting bored and being unhappy in his jobs. So I asked to speak to him. Within 10 minutes of talking to Kevin, I discovered exactly why this was happening to him. Kevin got hired to create a product and then his job required him to maintain that product. This was the wrong fit for him.
Kevin had the skills and motivation to accept each job. He thought each job would be his dream job. However, they were all the wrong fit for him. Why? Kevin is a visionary. He has the natural talent to create concepts with his ideas. A better fit for Kevin is in the Product Development Department of a larger company.
Kevin's dream job is one that recognizes him for his talented creativity and vision.
He needs to work on short-term or long-term projects that allow him the freedom to create, create, create, and let another department maintain and update his product creations. Now that Kevin discovered the right fit for him, he is thriving in his dream job. Does this situation sound like something that's happened to you?
The second story is about identifying your talents. Mary was working in her dream job, a non-profit organization in the arts. She was very intelligent, conscientious and very organized. She loved her job and the people that worked with her, until the organization decided to make major changes. They hired an outside company to come in and reorganize each department.
Mary's dream job was about to change.
One day she came into her office and everything was in boxes. And, she had a new boss. He was hired to reorganize everything. Mary was the organizer of her office space and now she is feeling overwhelmed and disorganized in her own office. Can you relate to Mary?
Her new boss gave her an assignment to create something for him. Mary had always, prioritized, met deadlines and completed her daily work. But she didn’t have a clue how to do this new assignment and didn’t understand why.
She called me and told me what happened. She said she felt stupid and incompetent. Suddenly her dream job turned into a nightmare. I told Mary the company hired to come in and reorganize everything, could have gotten to know her team first and recreate a balanced team based on the team members strengths, before giving out new assignments. I also told her she was not stupid or incompetent. She was just given an assignment that wasn't the right fit for her. An assignment that only a visionary would have the ability to do quickly. She was more practical and when given something to create with, she could create and run with it. This was not the case. I reminded Mary her husband is a visionary, so we discussed how he could help her. With her husband's help, she completed her assignment. Have you had a dream job?
