In addition to writing Executive results-oriented resumes, I coach Executives on how to interview, network and negotiate to get results. Are you in an Executive job search? If so, I always recommend contacting at least two recruiters specializing in your field and profession.
So, you've contacted two recruiters specializing in your profession. And, you selected companies with direct contact names to start setting up your own informational interviews. Did you send out your networking brief or resume with a great informational meeting letter? Is it now week two or three of making follow up calls?
Are you getting only voicemail and thinking, “Doesn’t the Executive answer their phone?”

As an Executive Career Coach, I know how difficult it can be to get past voicemail today. When you’re working so hard on your job search campaign and unable to reach the decision maker, it can be frustrating. All the tips below make perfect sense. You may just need a reminder and/or maybe there's a few tips listed you hadn’t tried yet. If it is a simple case of the decision maker not getting back to you, I recommend using one tip each week for the difficult to reach decision makers, when you are only getting voicemail. Here they are ...
1. Always call 2 hours different each time you call back. The decision maker you're trying to reach may be in meetings.
2. Call early in the morning before 8:00 am.
3. Call between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm when the regular screener is out to lunch.
4. Call between 3:15 pm to 4:45 pm.
5. Call around 5:00 pm or 5:30 pm.
6. Call in the evening when the decision maker may be the only person in the office and will typically pick up the phone at that time.
Always call 2 hours different each time you call back. The decision maker you're trying to reach may be in meetings each week at the same day and time. It's wise to create a system for your job search campaign. However, for the difficult to reach Executive, it's a good idea to change the time you call. Why? Often corporations have business and staff meetings every week at the same day and time. If you change the time you call by two hours you may reach the decision maker after the meeting.
Call early in the morning before 8:00 am. For example: try calling at 7:20 am or 7:40 am. This is also a great tip when trying to reach the Human Resources professional. Typically, the phone systems are not yet turned on for the day and the decision maker or Human Resources professional will answer the phone if you try calling at 7:20 am or 7:40 am just before regular working hours.
Call during lunch time between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm when the regular screener is out to lunch. A CIO Executive client gave me this tip. He said he always reached the decision maker when he called around the lunch hour. It makes sense when you realize the screener is out having lunch and the helper is the Executive Assistant for the hour. Remember, always put the Receptionist or Executive Assistant on your team to help you reach their boss.
Call between 3:15 pm to 4:45 pm. One of my clients recently said he reached every Executive when he followed up his calls during this time. He told me he reached all his decision maker contacts during these hours. He received 7 offers in 6 weeks by setting up his own informational meetings. I wrote a blog earlier this year about his success story.
Call around 5:00 pm or 5:30 pm. Sometimes this is the only time decision makers can be reached in the office. It might just be the perfect time for you. Why not give it a try.
Call in the evening when the Executive may be the only person in the office and will typically pick up the phone at that time. If the decision maker is working late, he or she will probably be there, pick up the phone, welcome your call and even have time to talk to you.
