Resume Success for the Mom Re-entering the Job Market

I read on Twitter @DanielLakstins was hosting a show titled Job Search for Moms on DreamJobRadio last Saturday,  .  So, I decided to write this week’s blog on Resume Tips for the Mom Re-entering the Job Market.  I love DreamJobRadio and I was out of town all last weekend attending classes and I missed the live show. 


Here is a great success story from one of my clients.  I wrote this story for housewives and moms re-entering the job market in one of my books titled “Just Resumes, 200 Powerful and Proven Successful Resume to Get that Job” by Kim Marino. This is a true story from a housewife/mom who got credit where credit is due as experienced husband’s helper and volunteer at her children’s elementary school!


Dayna is a typical example of the housewife/mom who asked for help to write her resume.  The first thing she said was “I’d like to do something in the Human Resources Department but I don’t have any experience.”  The last thing she said was “Wow, I can’t believe this is me. I look so focused and accomplished.” Well, she was so busy accomplishing all the tasks of a mom she hadn’t had time to think about what a great match her skills were, i.e., time management, organizing, interviewing and public speaking.  These were great skills which fit so well into a resume. When I met with Dayna, she had been married to a doctor for 25 years. She had recently gotten divorced.  After speaking to this very talented woman, I quickly realized, not only did she have 25 years experience raising three children, she also had 25 years experience helping her husband recruit, interview and hire all the employees at his medical clinic.


Here is a summary of how we highlighted her strengths by creating three skills focused on her career goals in a functional resume format.


Related Experience

1. Human Resources: We highlighted the Human Resources experience Dayna gained while helping her husband hire new employees for his office on an on-call basis.


2. Project Coordination: Next, we highlighted her organization experience we discovered she accomplished from coordinating projects for three committees at her children’s elementary school.


3. Public Speaking: Then, we highlighted the public speaking experience she gained as a volunteer.


4. Then, we added a Community Service section and listed her leadership titles, organization name, city and state where she had experience helping out at the elementary school her children attended.


5. Next, we added her Employment History. It’s very important not to leave time gaps in order to land an interview.  So, we filled in Dayna’s time gaps with Home Management and Volunteer. This answered any questions the resume reviewer would have for what she was doing and where she was during these years.  We gave Dayna appropriate descriptive job titles relating to her job objective when she was helping her husband with his office needs.


Below is an example demonstrating how we wrote the accomplishments under each category we created in the Related Experience section of her resume:

1. Human Resources Experience: Interviewed, screened and hired qualified, talented professional and administrative personnel for a prominent physician as a Human Resources Assistant.


2. Project Coordination Experience: Developed a detailed job description for an elementary school principal position as the Chairperson for the Principal Selection Committee.


3. Public Speaking Experience: Conducted tours for the local art museum demonstrating poise and dignity while speaking to large and small groups of people as docent-art tour guide.


4. Community Service In Dayna’s mind, she was just a mom, giving the school principal a suggestion for her kids. She accepted the leadership roles given to her immediately after she simply made a suggestion to the principal.  Here's another example: One day her kids complained the library was too dark. As a mom advocating for her children, she told this to the school principal. He said “Okay, you can be the Library Improvement Committee Chairperson.”  And she was.


5. Again, we added a section titled Employment History.  In reverse chronological order, we added Home Management and Volunteer, Anytown, USA, 2003 – 2011. We continued to added descriptive job titles, company name, city, state and years worked.  For example in Dayna’s situation we gave her the appropriate job title of On-Call Human Resources Assistant, Smith and Jones Medical Clinic, Anytown, USA 2005-2011

Discover Your Dream Job in the Midst of Change

What is passion? By Webster’s definition passion is excitement, enthusiasm and delight. Is your job exciting and challenging to you? Do you wake up in the morning enthusiastic to go to work. Do you have  job that inspires you?  A job that delights you or a career you love? If your answer is yes, please send me your stories of inspiration. Was it your resume, interviewing, social networking or negotiating skills that landed your dream job or career? What do you love about your job? What inspired you?


If your answer is “no” or you’re concerned you will lose your job soon, or, maybe you recently lost your job, consider this … Did your job inspire you?  No? Not really? I wrote this for you too. Read on …


Where do you find your passion(s)?  Your inspirations? Your dream job? Could it be right here, right now? Could it be right in the midst of the sudden changes happening to you today? Is your future all about attitude? Is your future all about perspective?


The positive side of change (finding your dream job) is in your future. Yes, your future. I am speaking to you. Think about this, if you will. Is this you? “I just lost my job” or “I just lost … ” you fill in the blank. Ask yourself, can the positive side of change be in my future?  Can this change lead me to my dream job? Remember, it’s all about attitude and perspective.Your perspective!


Is there a catch to finding your passion?  Yes, there is! To find your inspiration in the midst of change use the following 3 steps wisely …


1. Be forward thinking. 

2. Let go of the past.

3. Start today to make it happen tomorrow.


1. Be forward thinking. Begin thinking of possibilities. I love the word impossible. Why? It inspires the rebel in me to think of … what is possible? Everything is possible. The possibilities are endless of what you can do now.


 2. Let go of the past.  Think about what you love to do.  What was it about your job that you loved so much? Remember, you are not your job.  The skills you possess is what you will bring with you and is all you need, not the job.  You still have these skills. What are the skills you possess that brought you joy? What are the skills where you excel? What have you wanted to do, but never took the time to go after IT?  What is your IT?


3. Start today to make it happen tomorrow. Creative, successful people know ALL their successes began with a thought. A thought that inspired them to act on IT. Think about it, ponder it, make it happen! Remember, the decisions you make today effect the consequences in your life tomorrow.


Hmm, so, you have fears, obstacles in your way.  We discussed how to eliminate fears in last week’s blog. Write them down. Write every fear you have and begin using your fears to inspire you to find your IT. How? Rewrite each fear into a positive affirmation.  Remember this one from last week? “I want to be a talk show host, but my fear is public speaking.” If this is you, rewrite your fear of public speaking to “I love my radio talk show host job and I am really good at it.” Say this to yourself every day for 30 to 45 days and watch the transformation of your thinking. For more details, read last week’s blog, “Create Career Success with 3 Steps to Positive Thinking.” It’s so great to be aware of the moment when your affirmation is coming true as you watch the doors of opportunity and the people show up right before your eyes, rhetorically speaking, while you are out and about one day.

Create Career Success with 3 Steps to Positive Thinking.

Are you at a crossroads in your career?  As a career coach, one thing every client I work with has in common is they are all going through a major change in their life.  When you are in career transition, whether you’re working on your resume, interviewing, networking or salary negotiating skills, it is so important to maintain a healthy balance during change so you don’t crash.  Remember, being successful includes maintaining a healthy balance in every area of your life.  So, in this week’s blog, I would like to give you the tools you’ll need to create career goals and overcome fears in order to achieve your goals.


I have a story to tell you.  Before I get started … I want you to know… that everything I’m about to tell you about my life is what led me to be in this positive place.  I am living proof of how using your own personal power by choosing positive thinking, can change your life. 


Here's my story.  I discovered the inner strength and personal power within me many years ago when I lost my job, I lost my house and to top that off, my dog of 15 years died.  I remember sitting there as I was realizing that almost every area of my life had changed within 1 month.  Was I scared?  You bet I was.  It was at that moment, I decided I had to clean house, mentally and physically.  Get rid of negative people in my life and surround myself with positive energy to simplify my life.  I was starting over.  My life was a new adventure.  What I didn’t know was I was about to face, within another month my biggest challenge ever.  The phone rang, I heard a voice say “Are you sitting down?”  I remember thinking “Oh God, no, not my son, Max.”  I asked “is he alive?”  He said barely.  My 7 year old son was diagnosed with bone cancer and if we didn’t start the most aggressive, experimental chemo therapy within 12 hours he’d die.  For me, it was incomprehensible that my happy little boy who already was challenged with Cerebral Palsy and in a wheel chair at the age of 7 was now fighting for his life with bone cancer.  It took me a very long time to tell this story without tears. I was already aware of the effects that positive thinking could have on my life.  I also knew that if I didn’t start practicing positive think right away, I would not be able to make it through this to be there for my son.


As I looked back and reflected on my life, I began to see that the most positive way to approach life is to realize that change is constant and the difficult times we face are not only opportunities for growth, but are there as a reminder that we are in the middle of a life lesson, a stepping stone to becoming our authentic self and by doing so, become much stronger, more compassionate human beings.  What lessons are you resisting?


Through the challenges I faced with my son, I began to learn the true meaning of acceptance, patience and courage.  Because I see this as a spiritual gift, I know deep down inside, you already know this too.  Personal power is only demonstrating your ability to create reality.  In other words, you have the ability to create your own reality.  And it starts in your mind.  Your vision becomes your reality.  What are you thinking about these days?


It’s true!  Some of us may experience power leaks that rob us of this ability.  They come in the form of discouragement, disappointments, loss and rejection, just to name a few.  It’s how you deal with it that will make the difference in your life.  Are you going to challenge your own mind with thoughts that create destructive and non-productive actions that will drain you?  Or, are you going to challenge your mind with thoughts of empowerment to take control with positive actions to get what you want in your life?  Guess what?  It’s your choice.


One question, I am asked so often with clients faced with career transition is “How do I know I’m making the right decision?”  Let me share with you a little wisdom I’ve learned over the years.  When you act on fear or guilt, you are probably not making the right choices, you are simply reacting.  And when you act on fear, you are giving your power away.  It’s only when you act on love, that you are making a choice and are being true to yourself.  So, my question to you is this?  How are you feeling or what are you thinking at the time you are making a decision?


It’s so important for us all to think positive during life’s journey.  Why?  Because your subconscious mind works just like a computer.  It doesn’t know right from wrong.  It simply does what it is told.  Technically, when you practice positive thinking, you are programming or reprogramming your subconscious mind to believe what you’ve been telling yourself and by doing so, many studies have proven it changes the endorphins in your entire system and you will feel positive about life.  And, you will attract positive things into your life.  This is the law of physics called cause and effect.  I listened to my first positive thinking tape over 20 years ago.  I read about it in a book titled “Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway,” by Susan Jeffers.”  I read “listen to the tape for 30 days and you will start feeling positive about your life.”  It took me 45 days, but it worked.


Since my son survived cancer, I developed a 3-step positive thinking technique that has worked so well for me and my clients to literally overcome fears and master success during life’s biggest challenges, while becoming true to ourselves.


Let me share with you the "Recipe for Mastering Your Road Map to Career Success" with 3-steps to positive thinking.


1. Create a list and write down your goals

2. Release Your Goals

3. Your Maintenance Program


STEP #1 Create a list and write down your goals

Write down your goals and any fears you need to overcome to achieve those goals.  Keep the sentences short and simple.  Write them as if they are already a reality.

For Example: Let’s say your goal is to become a corporate trainer.  And, let’s say your fear is a fear of public speaking.  Your affirmation would go like this: “I love my corporate trainer job.  And, I’m really good at it.” Then, visualize yourself being successful, content and proud of yourself after doing such a great job.  If you know what job you’re interested in, go ahead and use that company name in your affirmation.  In my mind, by the time I interviewed for the job, I was already successfully working there.  I got the job! 

I did the same before I started working for Orange County Public Schools.  And, I got that teaching job as well.  Here’s another affirmation.  “I have all the tools within me to be successful and reach my full potential, doing what I love to do and getting paid really well for it.”   Would you like this affirmation?  Here’s another affirmation. 

Example: “I am always in the right place at the right time.”  I have too many significant stories to mention them.  For me, it was like guardian angels coming out of nowhere.  And at times, you recognize when you are the guardian angel to someone else.  What’s really cool is when you recognize it because you’ve been confirming it for yourself.

One of the first 3 steps in Suzi Orman’s book “9 Steps to Financial Freedom.” is “think positive about your money.”  Suzi tells a story of being poor growing up as a child and how she used to dream of making a lot of money.  While waitressing and going to college she started an affirmation that said “I make $10K a month.  Within a year from graduating college she made that $10K.  As Many other motivational speakers, she contributes positive thinking to her recipe for mastering her road map to her career success today.


STEP #2: Release Your Goals

Before going to sleep at night or first thing in the morning, say your affirmations, in your mind, to yourself, 7 times each, once a day, every day for 30 to 45 days (it took me 45 days.)  You will know when it’s working for you because you will absolutely feel positive about what you affirm for yourself. 


What is so wonderful is you don’t even have to believe it will work for you right now, or when you start, but you do have to do these steps for the 30-45 days.  And, I promise you, you will believe it and will absolutely feel positive about your life.


STEP #3: Your Maintenance Program

If and when you start recognizing your negative thoughts creeping back into your mind, say your affirmations to yourself 7 times each a couple times more times or whenever you feel the need.  Eventually, 3 months will go by and you’ll recognize the positive change in you without saying your affirmations.


Here’s a great way to balance mental and physical exercise together.  Do you work out?  If your answer is “yes,” this tip is for you.  Say your affirmations in your mind, to yourself, 7 times each while running on the treadmill or doing your routine aerobic exercise each day. 

Maybe, you don’t work out but you go for walks.  What a great time to say your affirmations.  Any rollerbladers out there?  This is another great time to say your affirmations.


Remember these 3 words:  Ask, Release, Do!!

ASK = Say your affirmations

RELEASE= Forget about them for the day, let your subconscious take over.

DO = Go on with your day and continue working toward your goals.


You can also record your affirmations and listen to them in the car driving or with headphones while you exercise.  These are great ways to balance mental and physical exercise without changing a minute of your time each day!




As you follow this 3-step program and work toward your goals and visualize yourself being successful, you will begin to start recognizing the doors of opportunity open up to you, one door at a time, until one day, you’ve realized that taking control of your thoughts and through your own positive thinking that the many hopes, dreams and wishes that, in the past, you never thought were possible for you, have already come true.  You mastered your own road map to success!  This is a very exciting place to be in your life.  This is how it happened for me and is the reason I wanted to share it with you.  I know it will work for you, too.

3 Great Tips to Prepare for Public Speaking!

When I was thinking about what to write to you this week, I thought of one of the most difficult times in my life. A time so difficult, I realized my fear of public speaking changed from a big giant in my life to a tiny, little piece of dust. As a career coach, I am confident this information will be valuable for interviewing, networking and negotiating as well.

Do you have a fear of public speaking? Have you ever wanted to be a trainer, but your fear of public speaking has prevented you from applying for the job? Or, maybe you have a story to tell. A story that will help others, but your fear of public speaking has prevented you from telling your story to groups? Is fear of public speaking your answer to the question Whats your biggest weakness? FYI! Only use this answer, if you dont need it for the job. All these things were ME, many years ago. Can you relate to this today? It could be hard for those who aren’t native English speakers to speak publicly, so might look for help from somewhere like Effortless English accent training to help an improve their English.

Did you know that most of us started out with this fear? Well, in 1997, I had just gone through an experience that was bigger than my fear of public speaking I knew my fear of public speaking was about to end in comparison. However, I still needed to prove it to myself. So, this is what I did. I applied for the trainer job I always wanted and created a marketing campaign for my first public speaking engagement. I was ready.

The event took place in the caf at a grand opening of one of the local bookstore giants. The media was there along with my friends, business colleagues and people who heard about it throughout the community. One of my friends videotaped my presentation. Something you may want to do in the future. My motivation, at this time of my life, was to tell my story. A story that led me to write the speech for my first public speaking engagement called The Power of Positive Thinking. I was excited. For me this was a huge event because I was conquering a big giant in my life.

This week, I would like to share with you the 3 tools I used when I knew I was ready to conquer this fear, get out there and tell my story. My purpose for utilizing these tools was to reduce my fear of public speaking. Not only did these steps help me prepare for the public speaking engagement, they completely eliminated my fear forever. A fear I had for most of my life…

Tip #1 Write a speech.

Tip #2 Videotape yourself.

Tip #3 Practice, practice, practice.


Tip #1 Write a speech.

In your script, highlight the words you want to emphasize with a highlighter and put dashes in between words where you need to pause. This will help you practice reading your script and learn how to read a script without sounding scripted. A tool for those of you in sales. FYI! These are also great tools for you to use when you practice answering the interviewing question “Tell Me about Yourself” in your initial phone interview, as well.

Tip #2Videotape yourself.

I reserved a room at the local library to videotape myself. Today you can use a webcam. Get dressed up in the outfit you plan to wear to your speaking engagement. Videotaping yourself will help you in many ways. It will give you a tool to polish up and perfect your presentation skills. Which, in turn, will give you the confidence to know, you look just fine. After watching my first videotaping session, I decided to tape myself a second time. Just to make sure I fine-tuned everything. Do what works for you to accomplish your goals. Do it with passion.

Tip #3 Practice, practice, practice

Heres the fun part. LOL! Practice your speech out loud, to yourself, in the mirror, once a day, every day. I started practicing my speech 2 months prior to the event. Remember, use your time wisely and do what you need to do to accomplish your goals.
