50+ Employment Program Provides Jobs and Economic Growth

50+ Employment ProgramMany of you know I am a business owner, career coach and resume writer at JustResumesUSA.com. I write blogs for the job seeker going through career transition.  I saw a segment on “60 Minutes” last Saturday night about a program in Connecticut called “Platform to Employment.” It was so inspiring to hear about a successful 50+ employment program.

This program created jobs for the 50+ job seeker who was unemployed due to the economy. 

The next morning, I attended my weekly Toastmasters group, Noonshiners. One of the members, Michael was speaking about employment programs for the low income population. We spoke after the Toastmasters meeting ended. He invited me to come to a meeting at City Hall as a Citizen of the City of Fort Collins to be a voice and present such a program to the Economic Board on behalf of our 50+ job seekers.” I have never attended a meeting at City Hall before. However, I met Michael there and spoke to the Economic Board this week.  Michael’s speech inspired me to speak at City Hall and write this blog about this important issue.

People are talking about this program. This morning I was reading a new post on a LinkedIn Group for “Resume Writers and Career Coaches.” This post asked “Has anyone in the group seen "60 Minutes on Platform to Employment?” The writer’s take on the program was about the resume. Which makes sense, afterall, I was in the LinkedIn “Resume Writers and Career Coaches” Group.

Think about it.  These people are professionals just like you and I. They have families to support, homes with mortgages to pay and now, low self-esteem. Some lost their homes. This is a very unexpected and difficult time that affects not only the job seeker but their spouse, children and loved ones and the economy where they lived.

Today, I would like to write to you about how this program works to inspire you to bring this type of program to the City of Fort Collins.  And, perhaps, inspire you to bring this type of program to your City.  

 This is how the “Platform to Employment” program works …

The “Platform to Employment" program provides job assistance to people age 50+, who are highly accomplished professionals and unemployed due to the economy.

The program started with 100 highly skilled professionals who were 50+ and unemployed for 1 to 2 years due to the economy. The professional is placed in a qualified job where the Employer receives funding to pay for the first 3-months in a trial period. The Employer then has a choice to offer the individual a job. The individual has a choice to accept the offer.

Out of 100 people in the program, 70 professionals were hired permanently and happily accepted great jobs. They were able to get back into the workforce, humbled with self-esteem in tact, family focused and living life again!  And the economic growth increased with 70 Citizens in their city.

50+ Job Seeker’s Tool Kit! Which Resume Format Works Best for You and Why!

 Resume for 50+ Older WorkersAs a professional resume writer and Executive coach, I write blogs for job seekers going through career transition.  You’ll find my blogs written on the topics of resumes, interviewing, social networking, negotiating and many other subjects related to help you through career transition. 

I have been hearing so many stories lately about the functional resume.  Stories that are giving the functional resume a bad rap. I’ve been hearing these stories for years. And, I’ve been writing functional resumes that work great for my clients for 25+ years. So, I would like to educate you on which resume format is best for you and why.  And how to write a functional resume that lands the interview for those that need this resume format.

The best resume format is determined by your future career.

 Not necessarily where you’ve been. But where you are going now. Below is an explanation of the 3 resume formats. 

Resumes Function or Chronological JustResumesUSA.comHere's the 3 resume formats. Which resume format works best for you and why?

1. The chronological resume highlights the progress in your jobs.  This resume format works best for professionals staying in the same profession and moving up in their careers. 

2. The functional resume works best for professionals changing careers or making a lateral change into a different industry or position. It also works well for professionals making a career transition from business owner to a corporate position. 

3. The combination resume works well when only your most recent position is related to the jobs that interest you. 

If you’re 50+ include relevant accomplishments to your resume going back 10 to 15 years. 

This is recommended for all 3 resume formats listed above. If you held previous positions with a job title or company name that adds value, you can finalize your resume with a Previous Employment section and list one-liners with your job title, company name, city and state without the dates or actual accomplishments.

 

resumesLet me share with you the story of Bill. Bill contacted me last week and asked me to review his resume. He just paid a professional resume writing service $400 for his 2-page chronological resume.  This is a good fee for his level of position.  The accomplishments were results-oriented, at least most of them were, not all.  (I recommend all accomplishment be results-oriented.)

The BIG issue in Bill's resume was the format. He needed a functional resume. Why? Read on …

Bill’s resume was written in a chronological format and he was interested in a job where his experience was over 30 years ago.  So, his accomplishments went back to 1978. This resume is NOT going get him any interviews for the jobs that interest him.  And, it will age him. He clearly needed a functional resume.  He told me the professional resume service he hired only wrote chronological resumes.  

Bill didn’t know any better at the time. However, I really think all professional resume writers should know how to write all 3 resume formats. As you can see now, the reason why is because there is only one format that will work best for you to land the interview for the jobs that interest you. The only difference between the resume formats should be the focus and how the information is presented and highlighted. Human Resources is still looking for the same information, i.e., your job titles, who you worked for, what you accomplished and when, going back 10 to 15 years.

How to write a functional resume that will land the interview.

Next, I interviewed Bill as I wrote his functional resume. We included a Career Summary listing his job titles and company names, city, state and dates going back 10 to 15 years. Then, we highlighted 3 primary skills under Selected Accomplishments on the first page of his 2-page resume. For example, we added Program Management, Process Improvement and Team Development where we listed each accomplishment under the appropriate skill.  At the bottom of his 2-page resume we added a final section titled Previous Employment where we listed his job titles, company names, city, state without the dates of previous employment. Employers are interested in what he accomplished going back 10 to 15 years which we listed in the Career Summary on the first page of Bill’s resume.

Older Job Seeker 50+ Starts New Career!

Job seeker 50+ transitioned from Occupational Health Nurse of a manufacturing plant to a School Nurse position for a public school district

This is a true story. Frida worked for a manufacturing plant as an Occupational Health Nurse for 15 years. I met her when she attended a career transition workshop I was facilitating. When I asked if anyone had any questions or concerns, Frida was the first to raise her hand.  The first thing she said was “I just lost my job.  Now, I’m a job seeker 50+ years old and concerned my age will prevent me from getting another job.” Little did she know her concerns spoke for so many job seekers today. 

First, we discussed her positive attributes she would bring to a new employer.  Some of her personal traits were detail oriented, knowledgeable, great communicator and listener.  She also remained up-to-date with her nurse training and certifications. I suggested she focus on her strengths and accomplishments instead of her age because sometimes attitude is everything.  A positive attitude is necessary to reach your potential.  Without a positive attitude you cannot.

I remember seeing her again a few months later at the company Alumni Holiday Party.  I asked her how she was doing as a job seeker 50+, how the interviews were going, and if she remembered to send the proposal with her thank you letters.  She said “I didn’t have a chance, I got hired right away.”  She was excited as she told me about her new job.  She said “I am now the School Nurse for an entire public school district. And, I have summers off.”  She said she realized with her previous concerns she may have missed out on this opportunity.  The school district was looking for someone with her experience, motivation and maturity.

I recently read more valuable tips for the Job Seeker 50+.  One of my favorites was from Don Akers, MBA.  He was a job seeker 50+ that landed a job mentoring the younger generation of employees for the company that hired him.  Did you know that surveys show many companies today recognize the generation gap and the value of hiring job seekers 50+ to eliminate the knowledge gap.  The companies who haven’t recognized this will soon find out they are missing the value that only the baby boomer generation can fulfill.  Don Akers wrote a lot of great tips for the job seeker 50+.  You’ll find his comment on LinkedIn Group, Hiring for Hope Job Angels.  Click on the link and it will take you to Don Akers comment in the Manager’s Choice section under Discussions.
